The beat. Ba-dump. Ba-dump. Ba-dump. What’s your heart rate?
Normally, 70 bpm.
Ain’t it a little bit too fast for that rate?
‘Cause this is not my normal. I catch his fingers, which are dancing dangerously on my ribcage, and kiss each one of them. Slowly at first, then faster, and swallow them whole. I look into his eyes, You are making it abnormal.
The Man. The Lover. The cat. And an invitation to jump out of the balcony of one sky-high apartment one winter night, which was taken too quickly and too seriously.
It does look like a messy war. Some nasty invasion, is it not? This whole room and –
This whole situation, he says. He curls into a ball of down blanket and pillows on our bed.
Shh, darling, it doesn’t matter. Nothing ever matters. We can always get back to the beginning, can’t we.
But the vase will always be broken. Say, how can you mend broken glass and sadness?
The verses. The phrases. The words spoken too late and the regrets that came flooding in when nobody was looking.
And amidst the journey of the group of our three weird and unreliable characters as they cross the forest to “the other side,” there are songs, laughters, sadness, and everything from between the intimate sheets to the sweet smile of a morning coffee.
But above all, there will always be the song of love. The song of courage. The song of moving on and accepting the loss, no matter how great it is.
The song of being strong.
